GPS Grade Control Modeling for a Commercial Pad Site in Harris County, TX

A Houston-area earthwork contractor was given a Civil 3D surface model from the GC and needed a machine control file package built and delivered before mobilization. Lone Star built the 3D terrain model, formatted it for the contractor's Trimble system and delivered it within one business day of receiving the design files.

The Situation

The Contractor Had GPS Equipment and a Mobilization Date but No Machine Control File

A Houston-area earthwork contractor was awarded a commercial pad grading scope in Harris County. The GC provided a Civil 3D surface model as part of the project package and expected GPS-accurate grades on the finished pad. The contractor's equipment was Trimble-capable. The problem was that the Civil 3D file the GC sent was not a machine control file. It was a design surface that still needed to be processed, modeled and formatted before it could be loaded onto the machine.

The contractor did not have an in-house BIM technician. The mobilization date was close. They needed a Trimble-compatible control file built and delivered fast enough to run a site check before the machines moved.

They contacted Lone Star Layouts the afternoon before they needed to mobilize.

The Problem in Detail

A Design Surface Is Not a Machine Control File

This is one of the most common misunderstandings on GPS-enabled earthwork projects. A Civil 3D surface model is a design document. It defines the intended grade but it is not formatted for a machine control system. To load it onto a Trimble, Topcon or Leica display, the surface has to be processed in the correct software environment, built to the right coordinate system and exported in the platform-specific file format the machine reads natively.

For Trimble systems, that means a .gc3 or .svl file built in Trimble Business Center or a compatible Civil 3D workflow. The file has to match the site's coordinate datum, include the correct surface layers and be exported cleanly so the operator can load it without a format error in the cab.

If the file is built wrong, the machine runs the wrong grade. The operator has no way to know until the GC walks the finished surface and calls.

What We Did

File Received at 3 PM. Delivered Before 8 AM the Following Morning.

The contractor sent the GC's Civil 3D surface model by email at approximately 3 PM. Lone Star reviewed the file, confirmed the coordinate system matched the site datum, identified one surface naming conflict in the original design file and resolved it before building the control model.

The terrain model was built in Civil 3D, processed for Trimble compatibility and exported as a clean .gc3 file package. The contractor received the file by 7:45 AM the following morning with a written summary of the surface layers included, the coordinate system used and a note on the naming conflict that had been corrected.

The operator loaded the file on the first attempt. No format errors. No callback.

The Outcome

The Machines Ran the File. The GC Signed Off. The Project Closed Without a Grade Issue.

The contractor mobilized on schedule. The Trimble system loaded the control file without error. The operator ran the commercial pad grade using the machine control surface and the finished pad passed the GC's grade inspection on the first check.

No re-stake. No correction run. No call from the GC asking why the grade did not match the design.
